Chris Bjorklund sent me to skool
I hated school. No more!
Climbing stairs amid vertical steel bars and lush greenery, you will step onto the skool patio.
You may stop and dine outside. Continuing inside, you will find dark steel tables and chairs all topped with sleek dark wood. All are perfectly stationed on squeaky clean concrete. Even the spotless knives and forks are laying at attention on smooth brown linen napkins. Very soon you will be seated and given your skool assignment. The menu is typed on binder paper and the test is multiple-choice.
My guest ordered the hijiki veggie burger. I should probably list the contents and tell you the presentation appeared to be a still-life sandwich painting. Here you are … tofu, chick pea, red beets, hijiki, edamame and avocado patty with caramelized onions, local butter lettuce, tomato, house-made mayonnaise, yuzu whole grain mustard and served on a red potato pepper bun. Add to this a half-cup of carrot and ginger soup and a small bowl of house salad. $11.50 … “are you kidding?”
I ordered the washugyu sandwich. This is coffee marinated japanese washu-beef, mozzarella cheese, parmesan cheese, carmelized onion, pepper cress, creamy wasabi aioli, and served open-faced on napa batard sliced wheat. Yes, soup and salad are also included. This delight was a whole lot more money. $15 bucks
You too will like skool … tall ceilings and hard surfaces do not always equal loud noise. The full bar is well stocked. The entire staff is sincere and the owners are very dedicated. Next time I will test the squid ink spaghettina. Congratulations to this new San Francisco restaurant.
My friend Chris Bjorklund (media consultant & consumer advocate) has recommended another new San Francisco restaurant. I suspect it will also be worth the trip. I hope to get there soon. “Chris, how come you know everything?”
